Comments & Observations:
Another calm, beautiful day for performing a water test. For the first time this year Secchi depth has increased to over 20 feet! Gloeotrichia, a type of cyanobacteria found in many Maine lakes, has started to appear but is at the lowest end of the scale so far. Gloeotrichia appear as very tiny, hairy specs in the water and are known to bring phosphorus up from the bottom of the lake (where they lay dormant) to the surface. If there is too much phosphorus that can lead to a cyanobacteria or algae bloom. As long as the lake phosphorus levels remain low this should not be a concern and this is a reason why controlling runoff is vital to keeping the lake free of blooms.
