Comments & Observations:
The spring turnover of the lake has happened. This is not surprising given the early ice-out and considerable wind we have had recently. Turnover refers to when the lake has been completely mixed and is uniform from surface to bottom and generally only occurs in the spring and fall. Wind is the primary agent responsible for mixing the lake water. This mixing will continue until the lake warms up and begins to stratify. Stratification occurs because warm water is less dense than cold water. Eventually this density difference will be strong enough to overcome the wind’s mixing power. We observed two loons on the lake, one of which caught a fish, and both appeared to also be observing us and out testing. A bald eagle was circling in the distance.
